December Member of the Month: Heavenly Curtis

Heavenly joined Rainier Health & Fitness this past August and has already modeled a regular exercise routine. After a busy day at work, she drops her daughter off at RHF's childcare then gets her workout in, combining strength-training with cardio. Even though her knee is currently in a brace, Heavenly continues to come faithfully. Congratulations on being our December Member of the Month!

How did you find out about Rainier Health & Fitness?

I’ve always lived in the community—I’ve been in the community for the past probably ten years and I remember seeing the trailer and heard people talking about it and my mom joined and then off the internet I saw you guys had childcare. I moved closer to Rainier and so I just thought it would work if I came here and signed up!

What do you like best about Rainier Health & Fitness?

I like that it’s welcoming, it’s youthful because the staff are pretty youthful and I like being comfortable here. I was at LA fitness and this is more comforting.

What does your fitness routine look like generally?

Well I’m a cardio person—I love cardio—but I’m trying to include more weights and strength-training exercises. So I try to do 15 to 20 minutes of weights and stuff and then I do cardio so elliptical or treadmill. And I do the MixxedFit® on Mondays.

How do you balance doing everything you do between being a mom and working and motivating yourself to get here?

For me it’s really about what you want and how bad you want it. I’ve been big my whole life and I don’t want to have my daughter repeat the same steps. When you lose weight it’s rewarding in and of itself. That self-accomplishment motivates me too. And the feeling after is therapeutic for me, so I just use my workouts as a stress reliever.

What’s your favorite healthy snack and a guilty pleasure?

My favorite healthy snack…what’s healthy? Well my boyfriend brought me a popcorn maker and it’s an air popper and I love popcorn and the fact that I don’t have to use oil anymore is a plus. I do popcorn or fruit and I do rice cakes too.

And a guilty pleasure…chocolate, chocolate, chocolate.

Anything else you want to add?

I was just really surprised when the director came to me and was like “I just want you to tell you you’re the member of the month.” I’m like, “Oh, ok!” She was like, “Is that ok?’ I’m like, “yeah!” I was just surprised but it was nice to be nominated and that was very motivating for me.

The next step is my knee so I have to be careful. Because I’m very passionate so if I’m coming to the gym I’m coming to sweat. If I don’t sweat, I don’t feel like I did anything. So I just make sure I sweat and the more the better! But right now I gotta take care of my knees and both of my ankles are messed up. So I gotta start doing more weights because I’m using my legs too much. I’m just not a weight person—weights are hard! Cardio’s easy. It’s just a challenge and challenges are fun. Challenge is good. So that’s what I’m going to be working on—getting better with these weights.
