Couples of the Month: Leonard & Edith Root AND Ken & Jeanette Hagen

Most months our trainers nominate a "Member of the Month" to be featured at RHF. This month, we decided to let our members select a "couple of the month," in lieu of Valentine's Day. Age took the vote by a landslide. Out of ten couples nominated, we had two high-scoring winners. Both are SilverSneakers® and one was even a write-in vote! Read below to find out who they are.

Couple #1 Leonard and Edith Root

Leonard and Edith have lived in the neighborhood for over 50 years! They knew our founder Sili back when he was in 3rd grade and have been members of the gym since it started in 2005.

What made you want to join Rainier Health & Fitness?

Leonard: Fits the title—we wanted to get fit and no better place to do that than Rainier Avenue, or I should say Rainier Valley.

Edith: I was at the RAC (Rainier Avenue Church) board meeting where I was on the board when Sili and Ryan presented the idea. I thought it was an excellent idea and what the community needed vs. driving 20 miles to LA fitness.

Leonard: We’ve also gained friendships.

Edith: Yes, the social aspect, especially when you live alone. It’s a good way to meet people and finding out about community activities. We met our friend Joe here 10 years ago.

Leonard: It’s hard sometimes, though. As you advance in years, the muscles and bones are not the same as they were 20 years ago.

How do you stay motivated to keep coming?

Leonard: When you’re 90 years old, it’s harder to get up, but the value it adds to our lives is motivating.

Edith: It’s kept us active. It’s a routine that works into our lives and I like the early class because then you have the rest of the day.

What would you tell someone who’s considering doing SilverSneakers® but feels intimidated?

Leonard: Edith talks about it all the time, telling people what it’ll do for you. And not just you but also meeting friends.

Edith: It’s something you can do for yourself to stay well and sty fit. And if you’re willing to make the effort, it pays off. We’re able to keep up with a lot of things and maintain our home.

Anything else you want to add?

Leonard: We thank the Lord that he’s made all these things possible.

Edith: We’re seeing answers to prayers from 30 years ago and thankful we’ve lived to see that. Lots of good people have been involved—from donors to board members. to see this building in 10 years is a miracle.

Leonard: I’m impressed with the equipment.

Edith: I like that it’s a nonprofit and makes fitness affordable.

Couple #2: Ken and Jeanette Hagen

Ken and Jeanette faithfully attend our 9:00 AM SilverSneakers® class held in the modular. When Louise, one of their classmates, noticed they were absent from the couple of the month nominations, she campaigned for her friends to vote on them as a write-in. Along with the Roots, they took the high vote! Boy, was their class ecstatic when they heard the news!

What made you want to join Rainier Health & Fitness?

Ken: I got my SilverSneakers® card a year ago and checked out the website and found this place.

Jeanette: I tried after him. I never liked PE when I was in school but he was having a great time. I came as a guest once and enjoyed it.

How do you stay motivated?

Ken: I miss it when I don’t come. It’s the people and keeping fit that motivates me.

Jeanette: It’s a lot of fun. I like the instructors and really like the other people in class and think it’s making me stronger.

What would you tell someone who’s interested in SilverSneakers® who feels intimidated?

Jeanette: Just come and try it out; it’s a lot of fun.

Ken: It’s a positive atmosphere, non-judgmental and you’re just competing with yourself plus you feel better. It’s important as you get older to keep active so you can enjoy your life.

Anything else you want to add?

Jeanette: One thing I like is that it’s challenging. We get a vigorous workout. Some places treat you like you’re 100 years old but this class challenges us.
