"Where did you put the RHF parking signs and price sheets?" Alicia asked me.
"I left them in a brown bag on top of the filing cabinet."
After scouting every filing cabinet drawer, closet corner and shelf in the gym, we still did not find them. We had less than an hour before the official Grand Opening event and people were already beginning to trickle in and hop on the equipment for their morning exercise. I determined two options: start from scratch and trek to a printer for lamination (which may not be open on Saturday morning) or dumpster dive. A light rain continued to pelt the air after a heavy storm the night before. I pulled on my waterproof jacket and opted for the latter, or rather, the ladder, climbing into the 8 foot high dumpster. The first thing I spotted was a package of discarded lamination paper. Glancing over the piles of cardboard and sheetrock remnants, I decided that would do the trick.
A half hour later, I returned to the gym with laminated price sheets, san parking signs. Apologies to those of you who roamed the streets wondering where to park. Considering our Saturday Open House wasn't confirmed until Wednesday afternoon--less than three full days in advance--I'd say our move was a huge success! Shout outs to Sili and Alicia who pulled all-nighters to launch a soft Grand Opening the Friday before and to all the staff and volunteers who worked extra hard to make this day what it was. As a new member on this team, their late night efforts speak volumes about their dedication to this fitness community.
Our Grand Opening celebration brought together several hundred people. Visitors got to test out Group Training, Elite Fitness, Cycling Classes and ZUMBA fitness for free (personally, I hopped into as many of these as I could squeeze in to get the full experience). We concluded the day with a drawing for a free 6 month membership.
In fact, the launch went so well we decided to do another one the following week. Actually, our participation in Urban Impact's Grand Opening of Emerald City Commons had been planned months in advance. Both days were big milestone markers for us. If you were present at either one, leave a comment telling us what you liked best.
